Solar quotes are hard to compare because no two are for quite the same thing. Converting every one to cost per watt fixes that in about ten seconds.

Why per-watt is the only fair comparison

Installers quote different system sizes, different panel counts, and different equipment. A $19,000 proposal is not cheaper than a $24,000 one if it is for a system two-thirds the size — you would simply be buying less solar. Per-watt normalizes all of that, and it is the number the industry itself uses internally.

Once you have it, the rest of the comparison is about what you are getting for that price: equipment, warranties, and whether financing costs are hiding inside it.

How to tell if a quote is inflated

  1. Get three itemized quotes for a comparable system size in your market. This is the whole method — local spread beats any national average.
  2. Convert each to cost per watt. One quote far above the others is the signal.
  3. Ask each for the cash price. A financed price above the cash price is a dealer fee, and it is the most common reason a quote is high.
  4. Check what you get for the premium. If the expensive quote has better equipment and a longer workmanship warranty, it may be worth it. If it is identical hardware, it is sales cost.

Price is not the same as value

The cheapest quote is not automatically the best. Installer quality shows up years later, when something fails and you need the workmanship warranty honored by a company that still exists. A modest premium for an established local installer with a strong warranty is often money well spent.
